We have visited shipyards, fishing ports, brick factory, various local markets, villages of different tribes. We had boat rides in the beautiful rivers. It was an absolutely brilliant tour. We went on the two week Raas Festival tour. Of course the festival itself was an absolute highlight. We went to both a rehearsal day and the actual day of this important Hindu festival. Did the Raas Festival tour with Nijhoom (a little over two weeks). Interesting landscapes, chaotic cities, and one of the friendliest people you will find anywhere. We completed a 4-day (3-night) tour in Sundarbans in early January, and it was really excellent. I traveled to Bangladesh in 2022 to join the ‘Raas Festival’ tour organised by Nijhoom Tours. It was a small group tour with a packed itinerary. Everything was organised very professionally, staying at various locations in clean and comfortable accommodation. Food was very carefully chosen and very tasty. In Sundarbans we had a small boat, so when we visited the channels we had a small boat without engine in order not to scare off animals. All the other tours were on big boats and the trips were done on overcrowded engine-powered boats (I wonder if they saw any animal or bird). I did the 28 days discover Bangladesh tour in January 2020. I’ve visited more then 100 countries and Bangladesh has to be in the top five of countries I’ve visited. The scenery is beautiful, the people are outstanding, and the history is amazing.

The itinerary was well planned to include everything interesting there was to see, which in Bangladesh is the often the people going about their ordinary lives. The guide was also flexible and allowed us to make some small changes, skipping things we weren’t so interested in, and finding other things that suited us. Bangladesh is an amazing country!!! On the one hand, Bangladesh is very safe to visit, and from the other – almost totally unspoiled with mass tourism. The highlight of this tour for me was the Sundarbans mangrove forest which was the most beautiful mangrove forest I’ve seen anywhere in the world. In this tour, I also saw all the Mosques, Hindu and Buddhist temples that are on the Unesco World Heritage List. Bangladesh is a rewarding destination. Not because it has one or a few must-see sights (like the Taj Mahal, Amritsar, Bagan) for which a single trip would be justified. Favourite bits? Difficult to say though the Sundarbans were particularly wonderful, so beautiful and calm. The boat was basic but very clean with good sheets and towels. Every morning and every evening you go on a small boat into the side canals in the Sundarbans to look for the wildlife. This is such a serene experience! There were 5 people in the group. Travel was mostly by van, with a few train rides and internal flights to cover longer distances. In the Sundarbans, we were on a small ship with 5 cabins for 2 nights. There was excellent food on the ship. Bangladesh is well worth a visit. Nijhoom put us on a small boat that cruised the narrowest waterways enabling closeups of wildlife on either bank. The small dinghy pulled behind, was used to get into further out of the way places. My brother Steve and I spent a month in Bangladesh in November as guests of Hassan of Nijhoom Tours. Steve is an ancient cities (cultural) tourist and I am a biological tourist. It was a perfectly arranged tour and our only expenses were most meals (which came to less than 5 euros per person per meal with soft drinks). It is probably fair to say that Bangladesh for various reasons isn’t on many people’s wish list of places to visit but ironically that is one of the main reasons we wanted to visit. Recent events have been unkind to Bangladesh and its people. I admit to being apprehensive myself but decided that I would still go ahead with my trip.
